abstract = "Remote sensing images are largely used for monitoring and combat
deforestation at Brazil. One example of environmental monitoring
project, based in remote sensing images is the PRODES Project that
detects the deforestations and performs the processing necessary
for that deforestation data can be used in different studies, for
example, study about land use and cover changes. Some of the
techniques used in this process consist in extracting information
about deforestation polygons detected. This information helps in
the identification of deforestation patterns and understanding of
processes and actors involved in the land use and cover changes.
With advance of the research the Database Management Systems
(DBMS) offer spatial extension which allow that the spatial data
management, raster and geometry kind, be done by the DBMS. This
paper uses functionalities of the PostGIS Raster spatial extension
for applying image digital processing techniques, such as,
enhancement, classification and feature extraction with landscape
metrics in remote sensing image. The results show that use spatial
extension is possible for a well-defined study domain, such as
deforestation. Furthermore, the extraction of landscape metrics
for deforestation objects through PostGIS showed be a promising
and important alternative to the use of spatial extents in terms
of interoperability among systems.",
